This dynamic 9-member rumba group features three master congueros of Afro-Cuban music: Candido Camero, the legendary 89-year-old elder statesman of congas who is a living encyclopedia of Cuban music and has worked with all the jazz masters; Giovanni Hidalgo, the current master of congas who melds Afro-Caribbean, jazz and folkloric influences with his signature style; and veteran New York percussionist Papo Pepin, a powerful innovator who has performed with many of the greats in mambo, salsa and Latin jazz. The program is under the direction of four-time Grammy winner Ray Santos and includes guest dancers.
This program is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and American Express.
